Grid Brief International: Can South Africa’s Grid Recover?

It’s been a rough time for the South African grid. Blackouts have become frequent since 2008 and the national utility, Eskom, has struggled to right the ship. But last week, the country announced that it plans to add 2,500 MW of nuclear to its power mix to stabilize supply.

“The first of the new units will likely be operational in 2032 or 2033, Department of Energy Deputy Director-General for Nuclear Zizamele Mbambo told reporters Tuesday in the capital, Pretoria,” reports Bloomberg.

But will this be enough?
