On April 1, Taiwan’s electricity prices will increase by an average of 11 percent. Taiwan’s big industrial consumers will see a 25 percent hike. That’s thanks to the island’s major refiner, CPC Corp, keeping gasoline and natural gas prices artificially low since the Russian invasion of Ukraine, piling on losses for both CPC Corp and the state utility, Taipower. At the same time, the country is pushing for more renewable energy investments, a strategy already destabilizing other nations’ power supplies.
