Grid Brief International: What’s Next for the Philippines?

The Philippines’ economy is growing. According to a recent report from the consulting firm McKinsey, the country ended 2023 on a high note, “being the fastest growing economy across Southeast Asia with a growth rate of 5.6 percent—just shy of the government's target of 6.0 to 7.0 percent.”

Electricity consumption is tightly coupled with economic growth. So what’s in store for the Philippines as it grows? It’s no longer the 19th or 20th century, where development could be pursued by whatever means available. The Philippines, per our zeitgeist, will have to chase growth along greener lines.

Today, we’re going to look at the Philippines’ energy situation and what the future may hold.
